Once A Gangster
Felix Chong’s direction is a bit shoddy, but this triad satire has enough funny and familiar stuff to warrant it a thumbs up. Seeing Jordan Chan and Ekin Cheng play against type is half the amusement. The Infernal Affairs parodies are good too.
Roast Pork (Jordan Chan) is a chef and runs a successful restaurant chain in Hong Kong. but his success doesn’t come without a price, as his initial capital came through his days of being the fiercest member in the triad, and his association has finally come back to haunt him as his former gang boss Kerosene (Alex Fong) comes to him and begs him to run for Triad boss in the next election.
The fact is Kerosene has used up the Triad’s treasury in a misguided stock market venture. Only having Roast Pork as the Triad boss could help him buy some time to conceal the Triad’s empty coffers. A reluctant Roast Pork unsuccessfully tries to dodge the election but Kerosene allows him nowhere to escape. But on the day of the election, a guy called Sparrow (Ekin Cheng), who has been in jail for the past 20 years for a gang murder, pops out and becomes a serious contender for the position. However, it turns out that Sparrow is equally reluctant to run as his aspiration lies in becoming a University student!
While supporters from both sides ferociously try to push their candidate to become boss, both Roast Pork and Sparrow are equally ferocious in avoiding it, and will do everything to dodge this responsibility. Will their fight for freedom end in bloodshed or will they have their way?
